Getting to Sandoy

With a new sub-sea tunnel (opened in 2023), Sandoy is only a 30 minutes drive away from the Faroese mainland. Coming out of the tunnel, you will experience a soft and rolling landscape opening up in front of you.

By car:

It is easy to reach Sandoy by car. Driving from Tórshavn centrum takes approximately half an hour, and from the airport in Vágar to Sandur takes one and a half hours. To use the subsea tunnel, you have to pay a toll. Read about toll payment and prices here.

If you are driving a rental car, you must pay the rental company directly. The prices charged by rental companies might vary; contact your car rental company for more information.

The subsea tunnel to Sandoy opened in December 2023. It is decorated with light and sound. Inspired by cave paintings, the Faroese artist Edward Fuglø created ten artworks representing the history of the places that the tunnel connects—Sandoy and Kirkjubøur. The original artworks are displayed at Sandur art museum (Listasavnið á Sandi).

Composer Sunleif Rasmussen, who is from Sandur, composed a piece using sounds recorded while the tunnel was being built.

Read more about the artworks and sound here, and visit the art museum to see the original artworks.

By bus:

The bus No.650 travels between Sandur village and Tórshavn. In Sandur, the bus stops in the village centre near the Tourist information centre. It then drives to the harbour to turn back through the village before moving to Tórshavn. See the bus schedule here.
