Getting around on Sandoy

By car

The easiest way to explore the most of Sandoy is definitely by car. The island is relatively small and the villages are connected by good roads. The roads to Dalur, Søltuvík and Skarvanes are however narrow and steep in places, so drive carefully.

Be considerate when parking in the villages and use parking areas. Some villages, like Húsavík, have small and narrow roads. When visiting Húsavík please park by the big white building (Sólarris) in the middle of the village and explore by foot.

By bus

The bus No.650 from Tórshavn drives to Sandur. To reach the other villages you will have to change bus. The bus No.601 drives to Skálavík, Húsavík and Dalur, see schedule here. The bus No. 600 drives to Skopun, see schedule here. Note that most departures are on request, which means you will have to call the busdriver at least two hours before planned departure to make sure the bus is available. If you are getting a connecting bus, tell the bus driver.

  • Sp/f Steintór Fagradal located on Sandur offers bus rental (with driver) and have busses in different sizes. Contact: fagradal@fagradal.fo, phone: 361046/590600

By bike

Sandoy is known for its soft and gentle landscape, making it ideal for cycling, with the size of the island also being relatively small. But being the Faroe Islands, you can of course expect a few hills, especially when leaving Sandur to the villages to the east. You will however be rewarded with outstanding views on the way.

Sandoy does not have cycling paths, cyclists therefore have to stay on the roads. It is not allowed to cycle through the subsea tunnel, so you cannot cycle to Sandoy. If you are coming to Sandoy by bus, it should be possible to transport your bike in the trunk of the bus.

By foot

Some of the villages on Sandoy are connected by marked hiking paths. The marked paths can be found on the page Bygdagøtur and remember to read the guide to safe hiking before you go: Guide to safe hiking
