The hike to Nípan goes along the cliffs on the west side of Sandur village. If you follow the road to Søltuvík, you will find a sign that shows the start of the trail, just as you leave the village. The trail is marked with green poles.
It is an easy and mainly flat hike, suitable for children. Just be carefull and don't go too close to the edge of the cliff. All along the trail you can enjoy the magnificent view to the southermost islands - Skúvoy, Stóra Dímun, Lítla Dímun and Suðuroy.
Close to the start of the hike you will find the yarn bombed rock - a rock covered with knitting, telling local sagas about witches and the Nyx. This is knitted by a group of local women.
As you get close to the harbour the trail goes along a little hill with a cairn on top, this place is called “Gálgin”. Gálgin means gallow and the legend is that there used to be a gallow here. The legend is that a cow-thief called Runti was unjustly hanged here and therefore no fish was close to the village for three years.
The path used to lead to the harbour, but has been cut off due to construction work. Therefore we recommend doing a roundtrip, so when you get to the area where the path is cut off, go back the same way.
As this hike is along the cliff, you should always be carefull and never go too close to the edge. If you bring children along, always keep a close eye on them. Be carefull in foggy weather, as it can be difficult to estimate where the edge is. When the weather is harsh the wind and current can be strong, so the waves often break over the cliffs. Just as beautiful it is to watch the power of mother nature it can be dangerous going too close and you should keep away from the edge.
